International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW)

Washington, DC

Located in the heart of the District’s revitalized Chinatown community, Buch completed IBEW’s Washington, DC headquarters within an aggressive five month construction schedule. Construction included a pedestrian bridge in the lobby, high-end specialized lighting, multiple floating staircases, custom millwork and a rooftop terrace with a complete solar panel system, utilizing the base building’s solar-powered energy plant.

The IBEW Museum chronicles IBEW’s 110 year history through interactive design components, complex audio tours and touch-sensor monitors which highlight information on local unions. Buch worked closely with the museum design architect to ensure that details from IBEW’s history were clearly and concisely displayed, detailed and constructed. High-end finishes included terrazzo floors, synchronized motion-sensor lighting as well as full cast figures performing various electrical tasks including a wireman from 1978, a lineman from 1930 and a switch operator from 1910.
